Educational Philosophy

Empowering Students to Lead with Knowledge & Integrity

At CIV, each student’s learning journey is guided by an international philosophy that blends globally recognised methodologies, academic excellence, and personal development. Courage, inclusion, respect, and diversity underpin our dynamic, multicultural community.

We foster a unique relationship between the humanities and sciences, inspiring students to understand the world in all its richness while developing their individual perspectives. Through inquiry, experimentation, and a hands-on international education, we cultivate the cognitive and emotional skills that set them apart on the world stage.

Our graduates consistently demonstrate the independent thinking, problem-solving abilities, and cultural awareness that universities worldwide value most. They enter higher education not only academically prepared but also with the confidence and character to make meaningful contributions wherever their paths lead.

Inspired by Globally Respected Educational Approaches

Our educational philosophy draws inspiration from renowned theorists such as Vygotsky, Gardner, and Piaget, emphasising student-led learning that respects cognitive developmental stages while nurturing creative abilities. We encourage learning through self-discovery, promote projects that address global humanitarian issues, and maintain a balanced relationship between emotional well-being and academic achievement.

International Education

An International Education for Success in a Globalised World

Our dedication to international education provides students with global opportunities and perspectives. Beyond the curriculum, this includes exchange programmes and collaborative initiatives with partner schools around the world, often using cutting-edge technology through the Inspired Education Group.

This international philosophy is embedded in both the Portuguese and International pathways, equipping students with the mindset to excel in higher education and their future careers both in Portugal and abroad.

Language learning is central to this international approach. Students are immersed in Portuguese, English, and French from their earliest years, with opportunities to explore Spanish and Russian as they progress. This linguistic foundation promotes cultural understanding and enables students to communicate confidently in our interconnected world.

To further enhance this philosophy, CIV is an accredited centre for the University of Cambridge (Cambridge International Examinations) and the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), and also serves as a partner examination centre for the Alliance Française.

Philosophy for Children & Youngsters

We have been pioneers in incorporating Philosophy for Children and Youngsters as a core part of our curriculum from Kindergarten through Grade 9. This innovative programme, based on Matthew Lipman’s methodology and implemented in over 30 countries, helps students develop creative thinking while fostering both intra- and interpersonal skills.

From an early age, children are encouraged to engage in public speaking and logical reasoning. They learn to apply philosophical thought to question the world, make informed decisions, and seek creative solutions to complex problems. This foundation in philosophical inquiry strengthens academic performance across all subjects.

The programme also invites students to explore fundamental questions about existence, ethics, knowledge, and meaning. Additionally, it helps them express their thoughts clearly and listen respectfully to others. These abilities, alongside independent thinking and effective communication, are invaluable as students progress through school and transition into university.

Recent Projects

Research Projects to Prepare Learners for the Challenges of the 21st Century

Research projects are a cornerstone of our educational approach, encouraging students to be active investigators rather than passive recipients of information. Teachers design initiatives across science, mathematics, the arts, philosophy, literature, and first and foreign languages, creating a dynamic environment where curiosity drives learning.

    Students learn to:

    • Ask meaningful questions
    • Conduct research
    • Evaluate and challenge sources
    • Test hypotheses
    • Synthesise findings
    • Present discoveries through multiple media formats.

The formal presentation component reinforces cooperative learning and overall development, while the cross-curricular nature of projects helps students see connections between subjects, contributing to better academic results overall.

Teachers act as mediators and advisors, guiding students while allowing them to define their own research paths and construct knowledge independently. This approach cultivates autonomy, self-reliance, critical thinking, and presentation skills — all essential for university success and lifelong learning.

Problem-Solving for Mathematical & Linguistic Thinking

Our Problem-Solving Programme was launched in 2011 and is meant for children in Kindergarten and Primary School. It helps students develop analytical thinking and complex cognitive skills. They explore problems, analyse verbal and written information, formulate hypotheses, organise knowledge, and collaborate to find solutions.

In a supportive yet rigorous environment, students engage in ongoing dialogue with teachers, learning to articulate their reasoning, evaluate different approaches, and communicate their thinking clearly. This methodology strengthens both mathematical and linguistic skills, fostering complementary understanding across the curriculum.

Beyond intellectual growth, the programme nurtures a resilient, solutions-oriented mindset, creativity, independent and logical thinking, and peer cooperation—skills that equip students to tackle complex challenges successfully, both in secondary education and throughout life.
