Cambridge International GCSE Curriculum

CIV’s International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum integrates global academic standards with local educational requirements. We provide a broad and rigorous programme that prepares students to excel in both international and domestic post-16 pathways.

The IGCSE's two-year structure fosters progressive skill development: Grade 9 focuses on foundational knowledge acquisition, while Grade 10 emphasises advanced application, examination readiness, and preparation for further study, including the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Students take six core subjects—including English Language and Literature, Portuguese, Mathematics, and Coordinated Sciences—reinforcing the bilingual competencies developed in earlier years. They also choose two elective subjects aligned with their interests and future goals.

IGCSE Subjects

Students collaborate closely with academic advisors to select IGCSE subject combinations aligned with their university aspirations. Guidance begins in Grade 9 through consultations with students, parents, and educational specialists, and is reinforced with subject fairs and review meetings. Strategic subject pairing cultivates complementary skills and paves the way for future IB subject choices. Exceptional students may pursue independent projects or accelerated learning, while those needing support receive targeted assistance, ensuring outstanding outcomes for all learners.

Regular review meetings throughout the programme ensure students remain on track with their goals while providing opportunities to adjust plans based on developing interests or changing circumstances. This personalised approach recognises that academic and career planning is an evolving process requiring ongoing guidance and support.

All students enrolled in our IGCSE pathway in the Algarve take the following subjects, ensuring a strong academic foundation:

  • English Language & Literature – develops advanced communication, analytical, and creative writing skills.
  • Mathematics (Extended) – builds problem-solving and analytical thinking for higher-level study in STEM fields.
  • Coordinated Sciences (Double Award) – integrated Biology, Chemistry, and Physics with practical lab work, fostering scientific literacy and application.
  • History – cultivates critical analysis, evidence evaluation, and understanding of societies across time periods.
  • Physical Education – promotes fitness, teamwork, and leadership.
  • Portuguese – strengthens local language competency, supporting integration, bilingualism, and global mobility.

IGCSE students select two electives to explore diverse interests and develop career-relevant skills:

  • Drama – builds confidence, creativity, presentation, and communication skills through performance and theoretical study.
  • Art & Design – nurtures visual communication and creativity while developing individual portfolios.
  • Computer Science – develops programming, computational thinking, and technological literacy for modern careers.
  • French (Foreign Language) – enhances multilingual skills, cultural awareness, and international opportunities.

Learn More About the Cambridge IGCSE

Cambridge International examinations take place in May and June of Grade 10, with results released in August. Each subject is assessed primarily through externally marked papers, ensuring consistent international standards and objective evaluation of student achievement. These assessments are designed to test both factual knowledge and analytical skills, encouraging students to engage deeply with the material rather than rely on memorisation alone.

Assessment methods vary by subject and may include written examinations, practical tasks, coursework, laboratory work, or portfolio development. This diverse approach allows students with different strengths and learning styles to demonstrate their abilities comprehensively.

Mock examinations in January provide valuable preparation for final assessments, helping students experience exam conditions, receive feedback, and build confidence. Our school also uses a digital exam-capture system for speaking and oral assessments, ensuring accurate evaluation of communication skills.

At our IGCSE school in the Algarve, the grading scale ranges from 9 (highest) to 1 (lowest), with grade 4 representing a standard pass. This transparent grading system clearly differentiates student achievement levels, helping universities and employers accurately assess individual capabilities while providing students with clear targets for success.

Student success in our IGCSE programme depends fundamentally on teaching quality. Our experienced educators, many with advanced degrees from prestigious universities, bring international expertise and diverse cultural perspectives while upholding the highest academic standards.

Our IGCSE teachers engage in continuous professional development through training sessions and international conferences, supporting academic excellence. This commitment keeps them up to date with curriculum changes and innovative teaching approaches, directly enhancing student outcomes and positioning CIV among the best IGCSE schools in the Algarve.

Several staff members serve as Cambridge examiners or moderators, giving them unique insight into assessment standards. This expertise ensures teaching approaches align with exam requirements while helping students understand not only the content but also how their knowledge will be evaluated.

Small teaching groups enable personalised attention and regular feedback, allowing teachers to adapt instruction to individual student needs. Acting as both instructors and mentors, our expert IGCSE teachers guide students academically and personally, helping them excel across the programme.
