Chess started at CIV in 1987/1988. At the end of the year, to the sound of the Bolero by Ravel, a chess tournament took place between two teams, with a simple board and in front of parents and students. In the three years that followed, the international Chess Day was celebrated and gave rise to Chess Week. The Chess Club complemented the other existing clubs (football, tennis, basketball, drama, …) in 1991/1992. The club started taking place regularly and the first Chess Championship was organised at CIV. After a few years of being on pause, the Chess Club was once again initiated. Chess is an activity that promotes cognitive skills, problem solving, tactical and critical thinking, defining strategies and making decisions.
